Kimono Remake/Upcycle

New Kimono Culture and Inspiring Stories

Kimonos used to be a common part of daily life in Japan,
however, nowadays artisans pour their soulsinto making kimonos are worn
less and less often and are hidden away in chests of drawers.
Byremaking memory-filled kimonos and obis into new clothes and accessories,
they come out of hiding inand their beauty are revived with new value and purpose.

We at “Nagomi” strongly believe in passing on kimono culture and support creative activities that make
use of kimonos and obis. Among them, kimono remake (upcycling) specialists are especially important.
The words that the artists say are common to all of us: “It is sad that kimonos tailored with great skill are
thrown away. I don’t want them to be fodder for chests.” “I am really happy when I see my memorable
kimono reborn and am pleased with the work.”
We will pass on the thick trunk of our world-class kimono culture to the next generation while adopting
methods that suit the times. For this purpose, we have many wonderful “Kimono Remake Works” that we
will introduce and spread widely.

*We always display and sell kimono remake clothes and remake Japanese goods (nagomidori) at
“Nagomi Honmachi Store” even on days other than the exhibition days.
